The Makowski Flight from Los Angeles to Poland 1938 (May 13 - June 5): Airmail envelope from "Buenos Aires May 24" franked with 15 c. to Warsaw, carried by a team of LOT Polish Airlines personnel, headed by General Manager Major Wacław Makowski on their experimental flight from Los Angeles via Southamerica back to Poland in a Lokheed 14H Super Electra. Envelope with special flight cachet in violet and "Warszawa 2 "LOT" 5.VI.38.18" arrival mark on reverse. Fine and scarce.rnThe team delivered an L–14H Super Electra aircraft, the fifth Lockheed long–distance civilian passenger and cargo aircraft purchased by LOT (registration SP–LMK). They took off from Burbank, California, and, after touring back South America, crossed the South Atlantic from Natal, Brazil to Dakar,Senegal traveling 1,908 miles (3,070 km) in 11 hours 10 minutes, then via Rome to Warszawa. The distance covered was 15,441 miles (24,850 km) and the flying time was 85 hours, quite a feat at that time. 1851: Remarkable tiny entire letter (63 x 33 mm.) with embossed colourless illustration of lady on horseback with wreathed "TO" below, endorsed "per Express" addressed to "J.C. Kindman, Present" and reverse with paper seal reading "IF YOU NEGLECT ME YOU LOSE ME". The love letter enclosed reads: "Agawam¹ '51, Tues. Eve; My dear Charles, Are you still in the land of the living? If so, permit me who am so much the younger of the twain to speak a word to thee. Why in the world do we not either see you, hear from you, or let us know the reason why? Do you know how it grieves me to see you so negligent? Oh! Charles! "You'll break my heart, I fear you will, if you continue so" ² If you do not write soon I fear you will never receive another such a long letter from me as this. Yours to the end, Hannah".rn1. Steamers (most of these annotated in pencil at top), with Trujillo example showing superb oval framed "VAPOR" in black, Huaraz example with str. line "VAPOR" in black, 1854 Lambayeque example with superb oval framed "VAPOR" in red; Paita with framed "VAPOR" in black; further examples from Lima, Casma, Chiclayo, Chincha Alta, Islas de Chincha (diamond framed "VAPOR" in blue), Islay, Pisco, Yca and Yungay (framed "VAPOR" in black) and an 1846 with handstamped "Capitania del Puerto Del Callao" Anchor marking. 1871 (26 Aug): Large cloth used for jurdicial correspondence and carried from Riobamba to Quito, bearing 4 r. pale rose in block of 17 originating from positions 49 / 59-62 / 72-75 / 85-88 / 98-101 from the base of sheet, together with 1 r. yellow-buff, tied by second type cds of RIOBAMBA, overpaying by ½ r. the 34½ ounces noted in manuscript. The cloth was was reused four days later and adressed back from Quito to Riobamba by applying 4 r. scarlet, a strip of three and a single, ½ r. blue and 1 r. yellow-buff, thus making up an infrequent three-colour franking including the 4 reales, all tied by QUITO cds in red.rnNote: The largest multiple known, in used condition, of the scarcest first issue value. The largest recorded franking in the classic period of Ecuador. Air Mail 1932: Washington 3 c. purple, used on official First Transatlanic Flight cover from New York to Kaunas, Lithuanian, dated 15 July 1933, tied by Brooklyn duplex in black, carried on the ill fated 'Lituanica' which crash in Poland 650km away from the intended destination, with event postmark in black alongside the commemorative cachet in violet, cover number '270' (there being 983 sold to support the flight costs), to the reverse a Kaunas arrival dated 18 July 1933.rnNote: The 'Lituanica' was a Bellanca CH-300 Pacemaker airplane flown from New York across the Atlantic by Lithuanian pilots Steponas Darius and Stasys Girėnas in 1933. After successfully flying 6,411 km (4,043 miles), it crashed, due to undetermined circumstances, 650 km (404 miles) from its destination, Kaunas, Lithuania.
